As an urban climate adaptation coordinator in two Bangladeshi municipalities, I keep hitting the same wall: flood-prone residents hold detailed risk knowledge, but municipal planning teams rarely receive it in a form their mandates and budgets can absorb. My limitation is translating community evidence into policy-legible outputs, and then judging whether the procedural change actually reduces flood exposure. My first choice is the MSc Climate Change, Development and Policy at the University of Sussex (IDS). It addresses exactly where my work stalls. The Climate Change Policy module would teach me how national adaptation commitments, including the UK's third National Adaptation Programme and Bangladesh's NAP, are converted into city-level decisions; Adaptation and Development would sharpen my grasp of urban political economy; and Research Methods would give me defensible evaluation design. In my last drainage project, I trained 18 youth volunteers to validate resident flood reports and presented a prioritized map to ward-level staff. I could show where lived flood patterns diverged from drain inventories, but I could not frame that evidence inside the planning cycle staff already use. I would test course frameworks against this case in coursework and seek a dissertation on integrating community risk evidence into municipal adaptation plans. I would also use IDS Climate Change cluster seminars to compare urban adaptation approaches with practitioners, and ask course peers to critique my evaluation indicators before fieldwork. I also reviewed the MSc Environmental Governance (Manchester) and MSc Sustainability (Leeds). Both are strong, but Sussex's development-focused policy lens fits closest. On return, I will pilot a community-evidence-to-planning template with two ward offices, tracking whether drainage prioritization lists reflect resident-reported hotspots and whether monsoon disruption days fall over one cycle, then share findings with the City Corporation adaptation focal point.
