Chevening Scholarship Eligibility 2027/2028

Chevening eligibility is a pass-or-fail gate before application quality is assessed. Check citizenship and residence, the return-home commitment, undergraduate completion date, 2,800 post-degree work hours, and three eligible UK courses before preparing essays.

Chevening eligibility checklist

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory and meet any applicable residence rule
  • Commit to returning to the country of award for at least two years after the scholarship
  • Have at least 2,800 hours of eligible work experience acquired after completing undergraduate study
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's programme
  • Have finished undergraduate study at least two years before the application deadline
  • Apply to three different, eligible UK master's courses
  • Secure an unconditional offer from at least one selected course by the offer deadline

The graduation-date test for 2027/2028

Current official guidance says applicants must have finished their undergraduate studies at least two years before the application deadline. The published deadline is 6 October 2026. By calendar calculation, that points to an undergraduate completion date no later than 6 October 2024.

This date is an inference from the official two-year rule and the official deadline, not a substitute for Chevening's eligibility checker. Degree completion, graduation ceremonies, transcripts, and certificate dates can differ, so verify the date Chevening asks you to enter before relying on the calculation.

Work experience that can count

Full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships can contribute when acquired after undergraduate completion. Applicants may enter up to 15 employment periods, and the system calculates weeks × hours per week.

Age and career stage

Chevening has no upper age limit. A later-career applicant or a person returning after a career break must still satisfy every formal eligibility rule and present a coherent reason for the course and future plan.
