Chevening Studying in the UK Essay Example: Youth employment social enterprise founder

Running my youth-employment social enterprise has shown me a clear limit in my own toolkit. I can coordinate small employers, schools, and grant makers, and I can read dropout data, but I cannot yet evaluate whether our matching process actually changes a young person's first eighteen months in work, or design an operating model that survives the loss of one major grant. The MSc Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the London School of Economics is my first choice because it works directly on both gaps. Two areas of study draw me in particular. The social impact measurement teaching would let me move from referral-quality stories to a defensible outcome framework I can show employers and funders. The social venture design teaching would push me to redesign our income mix, employer contributions, and accountability lines so the enterprise is not one funding cycle away from closing. I would also use the Marshall Institute's practitioner seminars and case-based sessions to compare UK matching models, and shape my applied project around an evaluation tool I can take home. My second and third choices, the MSc Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Imperial College London and the MSc Development Management at the University of Manchester, sharpen entrepreneurship and development skills but do not centre social enterprise accountability the same way. After returning to South Africa, I want to pilot a revised matching model with two existing small-employer partners over twelve months, tracking placement retention at six and twelve months rather than referral counts. I will ask Chevening alumni and course peers to critique the indicators before I present them to our board and to a youth-employment practitioner forum, so the evidence, not goodwill, carries the next funding conversation.
