Chevening Scholarship in Uganda
Uganda's Chevening pool is anchored in public health, agriculture, and a young, fast-professionalising civil society. With one of the world's youngest populations, Ugandan applicants often lead earlier than global peers — the essays that win make that early responsibility legible to reviewers.
Eligibility for Ugandan applicants
- Citizenship of the country, with a commitment to return for at least two years after the award
- At least 2,800 hours (about two years) of work experience — full-time, part-time, and eligible volunteering all count
- An undergraduate degree that supports entry to a UK postgraduate programme
- Three eligible UK master's course choices submitted with the application
- Not a recent recipient of UK government funding, and not a serving member of the armed forces

What strong Ugandan applications look like
Strong profiles come from health programme delivery (including major HIV and epidemic-response infrastructure), agricultural value chains, refugee response — Uganda hosts one of Africa's largest refugee populations — and law. Reviewers respond to specific delivery within these nationally significant systems.
Moderate volume with strong health-sector representation; applicants who quantify system-level contributions consistently outperform those describing roles.
Reviewer risks Ugandan applicants should defuse
- Health-sector essays that name the programme but not the applicant's decisions inside it
- Refugee-response experience framed as employment history rather than leadership under complexity
- Return plans that do not explain progression — going back to the same role reads as a gap unless the mandate grows

Application timelineChevening Uganda: frequently asked questions
Is health-sector experience the main path to Chevening from Uganda?
It is common but not required. Ugandan cohorts include lawyers, agriculturalists, journalists, and civil servants; any sector works when the applicant evidences owned outcomes and a specific Ugandan return mandate.
Can Ugandan applicants working in refugee response apply?
Yes, and the material is strong: leading services in refugee-hosting districts involves exactly the complexity and stakeholder management Chevening's leadership essay rewards — if the applicant's own role is made explicit.
When does the Chevening application open for Uganda?
Applications typically open in early August and close in early November each year — the same window across all eligible countries. Track every date on the application timeline.
