Chevening Scholarship in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe maintains a committed Chevening pipeline despite — and partly because of — a difficult economic environment. Zimbabwean applicants frequently demonstrate resourcefulness under constraint that reviewers recognise immediately: professionals who kept institutions, firms, and services running through currency and infrastructure volatility.
Eligibility for Zimbabwean applicants
- Citizenship of the country, with a commitment to return for at least two years after the award
- At least 2,800 hours (about two years) of work experience — full-time, part-time, and eligible volunteering all count
- An undergraduate degree that supports entry to a UK postgraduate programme
- Three eligible UK master's course choices submitted with the application
- Not a recent recipient of UK government funding, and not a serving member of the armed forces

What strong Zimbabwean applications look like
Strong profiles come from public health, law and human rights, agriculture, finance operating under hyperinflation-era constraints, and education. The leadership material is often exceptional; the risk is framing it as survival rather than strategy.
Modest volume, high commitment. Applicants who convert constraint-era delivery into confident, quantified leadership stories are consistently competitive.
Reviewer risks Zimbabwean applicants should defuse
- Resilience narratives that stop at coping — reviewers want the proactive decisions, not just endurance
- Diaspora-oriented career plans that undermine the two-year return commitment reviewers scrutinise closely for Zimbabwe
- Underselling institutional impact because the institution itself struggled — delivery under constraint counts more, not less

Application timelineChevening Zimbabwe: frequently asked questions
Does Zimbabwe's economic situation weaken Chevening return plans?
Not inherently — reviewers reward realistic plans that name institutions and roles that exist. A specific mandate in health, law, or agriculture in Zimbabwe reads far stronger than a vague regional ambition.
Can Zimbabweans working in the region (e.g. South Africa) apply?
Chevening requires citizenship of an eligible country and a return to that country. Zimbabweans working regionally can apply but must commit to returning to Zimbabwe for two years after the award.
When does the Chevening application open for Zimbabwe?
Applications typically open in early August and close in early November each year — the same window across all eligible countries. Track every date on the application timeline.
