Chevening Career Plan Essay Example: Coastal conservation project officer

After completing my MSc in Marine Conservation in the UK, I will return to Belize and resume work as a coastal conservation project officer, continuing with the Belize Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute. In my first year, I will focus on the revised Placencia Peninsula stewardship plan that I coordinated last year with 18 fishers, tour operators, and reef monitoring volunteers. After the most recent review, adherence to agreed seasonal closure periods rose from about 60 to 85 percent over six months, based on ranger patrol logs and self-reported catch records. I will track three indicators monthly: patrol attendance, closure-period compliance, and the share of agreed coordination steps still being followed. The first quarterly note will go to the Fisheries Department review meeting, where I will ask for the joint patrol roster to be added as a standing agenda item. Between two and five years, I aim to extend the model from Placencia to Hopkins with the Belize Fisheries Department and the Southern Environmental Association. The real constraint is institutional: mandates and budgets do not always line up. I will draft a joint monitoring protocol, pilot it across both sites for one season, and use site-manager feedback to revise it before proposing wider adoption. Beyond five years, I want to feed tested co-management evidence into national coastal policy through the Coastal Zone Advisory Council and the Mesoamerican Reef practitioner network. To prepare, I will use modules on participatory governance and policy evaluation, and ask supervisors at the Marine Policy Research Group, alongside Chevening alumni working in Caribbean fisheries, to critique my indicator set and pilot brief before I present it at home. Success means one adjacent site formally adopting the protocol within two planning cycles.
