Chevening Professional Relationships Essay Example: Agricultural extension coordinator

As an agricultural extension coordinator in Ghana, my work runs on sustained relationships with farmer cooperatives, aggregators, fellow extension officers, storage suppliers, and school-feeding nutrition staff. Because farmers and buyers rarely spoke directly, I started quarterly feedback sessions two years ago. Before each one, I sit with both sides separately, surface concerns, and prepare field-grounded questions so the talk stays practical. The clearest case is the Abokobi maize cooperative, about 140 smallholder members. After buyers explained moisture and timing standards, the cooperative changed drying racks and dispatch days. Using one lead buyer's intake logs over three months, rejected shipments fell from roughly 18 to 7 percent, and the chair reported about a 12 percent rise in average member sales income that season. Between sessions, I run a WhatsApp group of around 60 members where buyers post indicative prices and farmers flag crop conditions; last harvest it helped reroute a delayed truck before a maize load spoiled. When a storage supplier and a nutrition officer clashed over late deliveries to a school-feeding pilot, I convened a joint meeting; they agreed a shared calendar, and two neighbouring extension officers now use my pre-meeting notes template on their farm visits. I realised I lean on goodwill more than structured negotiation skills when buyers and cooperatives sit on uneven power. At SOAS or Reading, I want to study agricultural value chain coordination and stakeholder negotiation, then ask two Chevening alumni working on West African agriculture to co-review a short Abokobi case note; in return, I will share session transcripts and price-log data they have asked for. Back home, I plan to retest the session format with two more cooperatives and propose it, as an idea to be tested, at our regional extension officers' meeting.
