Chevening Professional Relationships Essay Example: Psychosocial support program coordinator

Supporting youth mental health in Lebanon's under-resourced schools taught me that professional relationships are built through demonstrated reliability, not formal introductions. My work with school counsellors began with listening. They were wary of new referral processes, having seen earlier coordination efforts add workload without clear benefit. Instead of asking for broad commitment, I invited them to mark up my draft referral notes and tell me what was missing clinically. That narrow ask shifted the dynamic. Counsellors added intake questions I had not considered, and the revised pathway was used across four schools in roughly 35 student cases over one term. Two counsellors told me follow-ups were no longer slipping between sessions, which was the change that mattered to them. Parent relationships moved more slowly. Several families had declined earlier outreach, associating mental health language with public exposure. I kept early conversations private and practical, and did not press for agreement before I understood their worry. After joint sessions, a small group of parents began contacting counsellors directly rather than waiting for school-initiated calls. One of those parents later worked with a teacher and a local primary-care NGO to run a half-day wellbeing session at the school, with the counsellors advising on content. It was a modest cross-sector handoff, but the parents owned it. At LSHTM's MSc Global Mental Health, I want to test our referral design against peers working in Jordanian and East African school systems through the cohort's case-based seminars, and ask Chevening alumni in education and health policy to review a short practice note on parent engagement before I share it with counsellors back home. I expect their critique to sharpen the consent and follow-up steps I have struggled with.
