Chevening Professional Relationships Essay Example: Community mobilization coordinator at a local nonprofit

My work as a community mobilization coordinator depends on trust built before any program begins. When our nonprofit's participation in two parishes of Wakiso district dropped by roughly 40 percent over a year, I formed a listening group with six resident volunteers, meeting weekly for three months. I did not arrive with a model. I asked what they already knew about why neighbors had disengaged, shared what I was seeing, and let their explanations reshape mine. They surfaced barriers I had missed: conflicting shift work, and resentment from an earlier project that ended without feedback. As the picture sharpened, I invited two community leaders and a social worker into the same conversation. I coordinated by keeping the shared question visible and making sure each person's input changed what we tested next. The group co-designed a revised outreach process with evening meeting slots and a short monthly progress note read aloud before each session. Over the next six months, average attendance rose from 25 to about 52, and a short feedback survey of 40 participants showed clearer satisfaction with how decisions were communicated. My director adopted the process as the default for new programs, and I still meet the listening group quarterly to review what is drifting. A partner nonprofit initially treated the listening group as extra work. I sent short, honest field notes each fortnight, including what was not working. Their programs officer began contributing her own observations, and later piloted the approach in one of their sites; we now exchange monthly updates.
