Conservation coordination in my coastal zone depends on trust between people who rarely share the same room. The relationship I have worked hardest on is between roughly 22 small-scale fishers in Placencia and a reef-health scientist contracted by our marine reserve. Early on, the fishers distrusted monitoring data they had not helped collect, and the scientist lacked local knowledge that would have sharpened her sampling. My second long-running relationship is with a coastal conservation NGO. I share seasonal compliance patterns; they show me how evidence is framed for ministry meetings. Last year they used my logbooks in a Coastal Zone Management Authority briefing, credited the field source, and asked me to co-draft the fisher-engagement section of their 2024 workplan, which the board adopted in March. In the UK, I will offer Belize co-management case notes to the MSc Marine Systems and Policies cohort at Edinburgh, volunteer as a rapporteur for the Caribbean Chevening Alumni quarterly calls, and request a small reading-and-feedback exchange with two Marine Conservation Society practitioners on community monitoring.
