Chevening Leadership and Influence Essay Example: Coastal conservation project officer

As a coastal conservation project officer in Sarteneja, Belize, I was asked by the Village Council in early 2022 to revise our community reef stewardship plan. Around 120 local fishers and 40 tourism operators depended on the same reef, yet both groups distrusted the previous process: fishers feared seasonal closures would cut income during low-catch months, while tour operators wanted stricter enforcement but resisted sharing monitoring costs. I ran a three-month consultation rather than a single town hall. I held separate listening sessions with each group first, so concerns could surface without posturing. One fisher leader told me, "We want healthy reefs, but not at the cost of feeding our families." I drafted a one-page summary of overlapping interests, stable fish stocks and reef coverage near tour sites, and used it to open a joint workshop in May. To rebuild trust in the evidence itself, I recruited 12 local youth as volunteer reef monitors and published their monthly logs at the Council office. The revised plan adjusted three closure boundaries based on fisher input, and tourism operators agreed for the first time to fund replacement snorkel and transect equipment. Average monthly monitoring attendance rose from 8 to 23 community members across the next two quarters, and the Corozal District Fisheries Office formally adopted the plan in July 2022. A tourism representative later told the Council the process was "the first time we felt heard." I cannot claim the reef's recovery, but I owned the coordination shift and the monitoring logbook behind it. I still need stronger grounding in marine governance and stakeholder negotiation, which I would study in the UK. On return, I will pilot this participatory model in two neighbouring villages and present the monitoring comparison at the Belize Fisheries District Forum.
