Chevening Leadership and Influence Essay Example: Legal aid coordinator for migrant worker rights

When a volunteer told me she was unsure how to record a worker's disclosure about withheld wages without exposing him to employer retaliation, I saw a gap in our intake that training alone had not closed. As legal aid coordinator, I had tracked that roughly 4 in 10 workers in the previous quarter stopped short of sharing case details, not from ignorance of their rights but from fear the information would reach employers. I redesigned the intake protocol so identifying details were separated from case records at first contact, and ran three short sessions with our 12 volunteers on explaining that separation before any disclosure. The program manager at our main referral NGO pushed back, worried slower intake would delay urgent referrals and thin out the detail lawyers received. I asked for six weeks to test it, then brought a side-by-side comparison from the same intake desk: workers giving full case detail rose from 58 to 81 percent, and completed intakes rose by about a third. After a joint review, the partner adopted the same separation step at their own desk and asked me to brief their two new volunteers. One worker said keeping his name separate was what made him willing to keep talking; a volunteer said she finally knew what to say in the first five minutes. I learned that sceptical partners change practice when you give them comparable numbers from their own caseload, not arguments. I still cannot turn recurring case patterns into policy arguments. On return, I will draft an anonymised case-summary template, ask two Chevening alumni lawyers to critique it, and table it at the regional legal aid forum's next quarterly meeting for adoption.
