Chevening Professional Relationships Essay Example: District maternal health referral coordinator

Coordinating between rural clinics, community health workers, and referral facilities in my district taught me that trust travels faster than memos. People act on information when they helped shape it. My closest working relationships are with clinic nurses and community health volunteers. When referral handovers started failing, I resisted drafting a fix alone. I sat with each group separately. Nurses showed me referral forms that demanded more detail than a busy outpatient day allowed. Volunteers described arriving at homes without knowing what the receiving facility had told the patient. I carried each side's constraints back to the other until we could redesign the referral record together, including a privacy note for home visits and a named follow-up owner for every case. Over six months, the share of referrals with a documented next step rose from 58 to 87 percent across the four clinics I support, and both groups reported fewer repeat home visits during our monthly review. With the district health officer, I keep the relationship useful by bringing evidence. When delayed follow-ups began clustering in two sub-districts, I shared anonymized case summaries and the referral log comparison.
